ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a Metal Artist and a Jewelry Artist

I like the engineering and innovative aspects of my work.  Like an engineer, I am building a structure that needs to function well.  In coming up with a new design concept, I am visualizing the whole process considering any construction difficulties, and I am often trying to solve a challenge in doing so.  I look for unique ways to combine materials including a variety of metals and stones.  The goal is to meet my customer’s needs in an innovative way and to create a beautiful piece of art that will elicit an emotional response.  I make an effort to create  statement pieces.

Sterling Silver was the first material I worked with, so I feel right at home with it.  I also work with gold, copper,  brass, and nickel.  I look for contrasting ways to handle finishes and colors.  I work with a variety of stones and other materials.  I find my design concepts have branched out from jewelry to other applications in metal.   I create metal collages, add metal embellishments to wooden boxes, and  create other metal items.  There is no end to design ideas or applications.

From the design concept throughout the process of completing a product, I consistently have the thought that “this is the work I want to do for the rest of my life”.  It is from this work that I get the greatest sense of accomplishment and pride.  I have worked persistently to attain the skills I have developed.   I get excited when I see a piece unfold.

ARTIST BIO

The silversmithing bug hit me in the early 70's.  After being  a hobbyist for several years,  I packed up the tools and worked  to get a degree in Business Administration,  graduating in 1984.  I started taking classes with Bob Hazeltine in 2004.  I studied with Bob at Hazeltine's Jewelry School  periodically for several years, learning techniques that I hadn't been exposed to, and fine tuning techniques already established.

My designs incorporate fabrication and/or wax carving and casting.  I am a four-time award winner for my work entered into the NM Jewelers Association competitions over the years.
