Here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we see hot air balloons in the sky frequently since we are the home of our International Balloon Fiesta.  We never tire of it, and we are truly excited to have one land near our home.  “Hot Air Balloon Landing” is a metal collage celebrating hot air balloons, our popular adobe style architecture, southwest landscape, and southwest sunshine.

The piece is constructed from brass, copper, nickel, and aluminum.  The brass skyline is embossed with rays of sunshine and crinkled aluminum clouds.  The mountain ridge and hills in the background are represented in stamped nickel.  The adobe style home, made from pierced and stamped brass, is nestled in a bank of copper trees which are stamped and oxidized.  A textured nickel road provides access to the home.  Engraved and embossed copper rocks and shrubbery line the road.  A clearing in the copper forefront is available providing a great landing spot for the hot air balloon which is descending from the sky.  The hot air balloon is constructed with a nickel base and a domed copper overlay to create the effect of a fully inflated envelope. The gondola with two passengers is visible under the envelope.  They are waving.  No doubt there is a barking dog somewhere in the tree line, though I have not shown him to you.   Each segment is secured to the background with rivets.

MetalScapes are collages constructed from multiple base metals.  Segments are pierced, textured or oxidized in order to vary shapes, textures, and contrasts in a scene.  Embossing and stamping may also be incorporated.  Some shapes may be domed for a three dimensional effect.  All the design segments have been riveted to the metal back plate.  The completed collage is mounted in a matt suitable for framing.
